The U.S. EPA and Minnesota Pollution Control Agency have signed a $16 million project agreement to remediate contaminated sediment in the “ponds behind Erie Pier,” two backwater ponds surrounded by shallow marsh wetlands in Duluth, Minnesota.
“EPA’s partnership with Minnesota continues to produce results in the St. Louis River Area of Concern,” said acting EPA Regional Administrator,
Cheryl Newton. “This sediment cleanup will address a century’s worth of contamination, protecting public health and aquatic life while improving access to a port that is critical to the region’s economy.” ....

During 35 years of restoration in the Great Lakes Areas of Concern, there has been gradual progress and a hopeful future ahead, according to a new study.
Development of a remedial action plan began in 1985 to restore heavily contaminated sites in 42 Great Lakes Areas of Concern (AOCs).
AOC restoration has not been easy as U.S. and Canadian researchers said in the study, and it requires focusing on gathering stakeholders, coordinating efforts and ensuring use restoration. ....

EPA Completes Two Great Lakes Projects Totaling $9.5M To Clean Up Contaminated Sediment In Muskegon Lake And Detroit River Areas Of Concern
Today, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the completion of two multi-million-dollar Great Lakes Legacy Act (GLLA) projects in Michigan through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI). These two projects remediated a total of 23,600 cubic yards of contaminated sediment within the Muskegon Lake and Detroit River Areas of Concern (AOCs), two of 43 areas identified in the mid-1980s by the United States and Canada as the most environmentally degraded areas in the Great Lakes ecosystem. ....
