Repairs scheduled to begin mid-summer for Buffalo North Breakwater

BUFFALO, N.Y. Repair work will begin this summer at the north end of the Buffalo North Breakwater.
Ryba Marine Construction Co. was awarded a $7.8 million contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District. Construction will begin mid-summer and will focus on repairing 750 feet of the Buffalo North Breakwater by using rubble mound repair on the lakeside of the structure.
The Buffalo North Breakwater is about 2,200 feet long and protects the entrance to the Erie Basin, the Erie Basin Marina and coastal shoreline from deep water wave and ice action.
The Corps of Engineers says it has identified the most degraded area to repair based on available funding, adding that further repairs to the Buffalo North Breakwater require additional federal funding. ....

The Buffalo District is proud of its role in supporting commercial navigation for Ohio’s harbors. Operation and maintenance and dredging of Ohio harbors by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is critical to the economy of Ohio, the Great Lakes region, and the United States.
Over 35 million tons of commodities such as iron ore, grain, coal, sand, stone, potash, and salt pass through Ohio’s eight commercial harbors on an annual basis, supporting tens of thousands of jobs in Ohio and billions in business revenue each year. Without dredging, these harbors would naturally fill with sediment and bulk commodities would have to be moved via rail or truck, resulting in significant impacts to jobs, business revenue and the environment. ....

Soo Locks to close for maintenance | News, Sports, Jobs

DETROIT The Soo Locks in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan will close to marine traffic beginning 11:59 p.m. Friday through 12:01 a.m. March 25 to perform critical maintenance.
The operating season is fixed by federal regulation and is driven in part by the feasibility of vessels operating in typical ice conditions.
Every year, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers uses the winter period to perform maintenance on the locks.
“It is a difficult time in terms of weather to complete this work, but it keeps this important national infrastructure project operating during shipping season,” Soo Area Office area engineer Kevin Sprague said. ....
