From fireworks to MumFest to Art Walks, how events impact small towns


Each of New Bern’s festivals and events play a role in shaping the city and have an impact on its future perhaps an even greater one post-COVID-19.
“I think these events are critically important to the vibrancy of the downtown and to the economy of downtown,” said Lynne Harakal, executive director of Swiss Bear Inc. “We need the resurgence of activities, we need you know, the large conventions coming back into the area, that’s all critical to the overall continued health of our businesses in the downtown area.”
The town of River Bend planned and canceled its first-ever firework show this year due to anticipated bad weather. Historically putting a parade on for residents, the total cost of the firework show would have been $7,500, however, they only had to pay the vendor compensation fee of $800. ....

Craven and Lenoir counties expect best tourist season


All indications are that summer tourists will again flock to small towns such as New Bern and Kinston. 
With an easing of COVID-19 restrictions, coupled with vaccinations, local restaurants, shops and tourist targets are ready for the best tourist influx in recent years, following two hurricanes and a pandemic. 
There is lots of excitement, because anywhere you read, people in bigger cities and densely-populated areas want to get to somewhere with fewer people, more open space, and that includes cities like New Bern, said Kevin Roberts, president of the New Bern Area Chamber of Commerce. We have already seen, just in the month of April, increased numbers of people coming into this market. That s very exciting, but in the process of coming out of this pandemic, it is also a little alarming to us, because mostly restaurants, but really all businesses, are having a lot of trouble getting people to come back to work.   ....
