City to take part in epilepsy training

The Grand Rapids City Council opened their July 26, 2021 regular meeting with an invitation for public input.Â
Taking the podium was John Lavalier, resident of Grand Rapids, who wanted to voice his concerns regarding police response to people experiencing epileptic seizures. Because of a brain injury from 1996 when Lavalier was hit by a train, he frequently experiences epileptic seizures. Sometimes these seizures can be while he is shopping or at work. Lavalier claims he has had varied responses from officers who are dispatched to the emergency calls when heâs having seizures.Â
One particular incident Lavalier cited happened at a grocery store in south Grand Rapids. According to Lavalier, who showed the City Council the police report, the responding officer indicated that Lavalier did not want to receive medical attention.Â ....

Restrictions on patio sizes at Brainerd bars and restaurants went out the window Monday, May 3.
The Brainerd City Council agreed to temporarily suspend the portion of city code that says establishments cannot have patios that exceed 30% of the total indoor customer floor area, due largely to the coronavirus pandemic.
“Having looked at other communities, we’re the only community that seems to get this granular about patios,” Community Development Director David Chanski told the council. ....

The Brainerd Jaycees will donate $204,458 to non-profit organizations from the proceeds of its 11
th Annual Ice Fishing Extravaganza, held in January on Gull Lake. Ed Vobejda, contest chairman, said that Confidence Learning Center will receive 70 percent of the donations, or $143,140.

It was a stunning weekend for Warrior athletes. Gymnast Julie Beasley won the state Class AA title in vault, scoring a 9.9 of 10.0 from all judges.
