NEW DELHI: Coronavirus test samples of 15 persons who recently arrived here from the UK and tested positive for COVID-19 have been sent for genome sequencing to check if they have contracted the new variant of the virus, sources said on Tuesday.
The results are expected in the next three-four days, they said.
The new strain of the virus was recently detected in UK and its presence has been reported in several countries, including in India. ....

Puri: slight extension in suspension of UK flights possible


Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Tuesday said there might be a slight extension of temporary suspension of passenger flights between India and the United Kingdom, where a mutated variant of the coronavirus has been detected.
Last week, the Civil Aviation Ministry had suspended all flights between the UK and India from December 23 to December 31 over the new variant of the virus.
“I foresee a slight extension of temporary suspension of India-UK flights,” the minister said at a press conference.
“In the next day or two, we will find out if any additional steps need to be taken, or when we can start easing the current temporary suspension,” he added. ....

Genome sequencing for all COVID-19 positive flyers who arrived in India from Dec 9 to 22


New Delhi: All international passengers who arrived in India from December 9 to 22 and tested positive for COVID-19 will be subjected to genome sequencing as part of the government’s strategy to detect the mutated coronavirus strain that has emerged in the United Kingdom recently.
Others will be followed up by the state and district surveillance officers, and will be tested as per ICMR guidelines, even if asymptomatic, between fifth and 10th day of arrival, according to the Union Health Ministry’s guidance document on genomic sequencing.
“All the international passengers who have arrived in India during the last 14 days (from December 9 to 22), if symptomatic and tested positive, will be subjected to genome sequencing,” the document stated. ....
