NHS Scotland's nursing workforce grows but figures 'mask problems'

The nursing and midwifery workforce in the Scottish NHS has grown by almost 5% in the past year, latest figures have revealed.
But while the news has been welcomed, nurse leaders warned the data “masks” vacancy rates and the fact that many members of the workforce are approaching retirement.

The NHS Scotland Workforce report, published earlier this week, showed that staffing levels had reached a record high with more than 150,000 full-time equivalent (FTE) staff now working for the NHS in Scotland – a rise of almost 9,000 staff in the last year. ....

Scottish nurses prepare for rally to reject 4 per cent pay rise


AFTER 15 years in nursing and 14 months at the sharp end of the pandemic, Ciorstaidh Reichle says it’s time she and her colleagues had a better deal.
The Inverclyde woman is part of the organising team for NHS Workers for Fair Pay Scotland, which rejects the Scottish Government’s 4% pay deal and seeks a 15% uplift for all healthcare workers instead.
The group, which has 10,000 members on Facebook, counts involvement from all unions and argues that years of below-inflation raises have left some workers 20% worse-off than they were a decade ago.
Next Saturday they’ll march to Holyrood and NHS staff from every Scottish health board are expected to join. ....

More than 1,800 Scottish nurses and midwives re-registered with the profession in response to the coronavirus pandemic, figures show.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) annual registration report shows 1,812 nurses and midwives joined a special temporary register set up in March 2020.
As the virus began to spread rapidly, governments across the UK urged those who had de-registered in recent years to come back to help in a variety of roles across the health service. ....
