(ABC 6 News) Five omnibus budget bills were signed into law on Saturday afternoon. Minnesota lawmakers are working overtime this weekend to try to avoid a partial statewide government shutdown. Legislators have until Wednesday, June 30, to avoid the partial shutdown.
Governor Tim Walz signed five bills that are part of the two-year state budget, “Today, I was proud to sign a strong set of bills that will not only help Minnesota recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, but will bring us back better than ever,” said Governor Walz. “These bills will fuel our clean energy transition, providing jobs and clean air for generations to come; support the next generation of Minnesota’s workforce by investing in our students; keep our parks, trails, and waters clean and vibrant; and help maintain the strength of our agriculture industry.” ....

But rural groceries, which perhaps needed that bump the most, did not see it.
Before the pandemic hit, a University of Minnesota Extension survey found that nearly half of grocery-store owners in towns with 2,500 or fewer residents worried their stores would close down within five years.
The coronavirus pandemic and the resulting trends of people shopping closer to home and buying local have given mom-and-pop grocers some optimism but have not erased the challenges. ....
