The Bulletin: Muslim community to privately mark attack anniversary

The Bulletin: Muslim community to privately mark attack anniversary
The Bulletin
Good morning and welcome to The Bulletin. In today’s edition: It’s two years on from the Christchurch mosque attack, the spotlight is on commercial radio after sexual harassment claims, and Aucklanders have enjoyed their first weekend back at alert level one.
Today marks the two year anniversary of “one of New Zealand’s darkest days”. On March 15 in 2019, 51 people were killed while they worshipped in two Christchurch mosques. The terrorist, a white supremacist, injured 40 others. The perpetrator was last year sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. ....

Wellington artist finds inspiration from cafes in Newtown, city centre and Oriental Bay

Mary Guo didn t start drinking coffee until she moved to Wellington.
Six years later she goes into cafes across the city and orders a flat white while she takes in the environment and sketches what she sees.
Her version of Wellington is vibrant with stand-out colours and whimsical characters. It’s a sight for Wellington residents’ sore eyes as the city has been criticised for its water woes, housing problems and more recently, it s self-labelling of being the “coolest little capital”.
Guo moved from China to New Zealand in 2014, wanting to leave the hustle and bustle of Shanghai for Wellington’s wild winds – in fact, the wind was a major selling point for her. ....

Te Hīkoi Toi: Retail art therapy in the Cuba Quarter

Matt Forsman at the entrance to his Marion St hair salon with art by Ruth Thomas Edmond.
Mark Amery takes a walk of small independent businesses in Wellington championing local artists.
Before galleries, there were coffee shops. Harry Seresin’s Coffee Gallery, which opened on Lambton Quay in 1957, was a place where artists could exhibit and community gathered. Many werre to follow, Today there are over 30 galleries in Wellington’s CBD, yet many good artists also find space outside them.
It’s easy to be snobbish about art in cafes not meeting a gallery’s curatorial standards, but things culturally are far more blurred between art, fashion and hospitality. In the Seresin tradition, Wellington’s cultural reputation is largely built on the flair of independent businesses breaking conservative norms supporting artists. For the best illustration, see the ever-gentrifying hipster blocks around the crossings of Cuba, Vivian and Ghuznee Streets. ....
