Jeffrey Patterson Oths | News, Sports, Jobs - SANIBEL-CAPTIVA - Island Reporter, Islander and Current

Jul 20, 2021
Jeffrey Patterson Oths passed away peacefully on July 19, 2021. Reared in Waterford, Connecticut, Jeff graduated from Nasson College in Springvale, Maine, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. He held positions in sales and retail over the years, but the true focus of Jeff’s lifelong passion lay in his love of Conchology and the seashells he researched, collected and cataloged.
An avid sheller for decades before moving to Fort Myers/Sanibel Island in 2003, Jeff saw Sanibel Island and neighboring Captiva as a shell lover’s paradise and treasure trove for growing his collection. He spent hours walking the beach in search of wentletraps and other shells including in 2009, when on Christmas Day, he discovered a long-spined star (Astralium Phoebium), later determined to be a new species on Sanibel Island. ....

YORK, Maine The fiberglass head of a watchful Paul Bunyan sits atop a weathered tree stump near an empty field on a quiet back road, dutifully looking after the nearby river and the community.
Like many old tales, the history of where this statue was placed first and how it came to rest in its current spot has little documentation and relies heavily on oral accounts, including from family of the property owners, neighbors and giant statue fans. Details are hard to come by and even harder to confirm.
The family of residents David and Sharan Gross, who own about 100 acres where the bodiless statue head is now perched alongside Birch Hill Road near the York River, would like for now to keep the statue s story within their small circle, according to their daughter, Amanda Bouchard, who described the giant head as a benevolent presence. ....
