Reuters WASHINGTON: A Nasa spacecraft, which scientists believe has collected samples from an asteroid, began its two-year journey back to Earth on Monday. Nasa’s OSIRIS-REx spacecraft is attempting to complete a mission to visit Bennu, a skyscraper-sized asteroid some 200 million miles (320 million km) from Earth, survey the surface, collect samples and deliver them back to Earth. Staff celebrated at the OSIRIS-REx control room in Colorado as the space vehicle pushed away from the asteroid, whose acorn-shaped body formed in the early days of our solar system. OSIRIS-REx arrived at Bennu in 2018. ....

The trip home for the robotic prospector, Osiris-Rex, will take two years. It reached asteroid Bennu in 2018 and spent two years flying near and around it, before collecting rubble from the surface last autumn. The University of Arizona’s Dante Lauretta, the principal scientist, estimates the spacecraft holds between 8oz and 16oz of mostly bite-size chunks, easily exceeding the target of at least 2oz. It will be the biggest cosmic haul for the US since the Apollo moon rocks. Mission navigation has received confirmation of burn cutoff. #OSIRISREx is headed home with a souvenir of rocks and dusts from a 4.5-billion-year-old asteroid! #ToBennuAndBackpic.twitter.com/BmaK1dkPDB ....
Nasa craft to bring ancient asteroid sample home A time capsule containing a sample of rock and dirt as old as the Solar System will drop from outer space into the Utah desert on 24 September 2023. That is what Nasa has planned for its historic Osiris-Rex asteroid probe, which began its trek home on Monday. Its precious cargo of 60g of ancient debris from the near-Earth asteroid Bennu is the largest sample collected since the Apollo Moon missions. Scientists believe it may provide clues on the formation of the Solar System. Nasa s Osiris-Rex started its two-and-a-half-year return journey from Bennu on Monday at 16:16 EDT (21:16 GMT). ....
