Escape Velocity: The Road To Space Copy link By Liam Jamieson and Charu Sudan Kasturi Copy link By Liam Jamieson and Charu Sudan Kasturi Mark the time and date. At 9 a.m. EDT today, British billionaire Richard Branson plans to blast off in his Virgin Galactic spaceship on a course for the edge of Earth’s atmosphere. It marks a brave new world for commercial space tourism, ranking among orbital milestones going back to 1957, when the Soviet Union launched its Sputnik 1 satellite to begin the space age. Nine days from now, on July 20, the world’s richest man, Jeff Bezos, is set to take off too, on a spacecraft produced by his company Blue Origin. Until now, only the Russian government space agency Roscosmos had taken civilians on paid excursions. But with their closely-timed trips, Branson and Bezos are telling the world they’re ready to bet their lives on the success and safety of their own commercial expeditions. And they’re not alone. Today’s Sun ....
NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) Building 4221 Named 2020 Green Globes Project of the Year GBI Announces 2020 Green Globes Project of the Year, Runner Up and Honorable Mentions in Virtual Awards Ceremony on Earth Day. /EIN News/ Portland, Ore., April 23, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) The Green Building Initiative (GBI) announced the NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) Building 4221 as the 2020 Green Globes Project of the Year in a virtual awards ceremony yesterday on Earth Day. The project earned a Three Green Globes rating under Green Globes for New Construction in February 2020. NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) Building 4221, located in Huntsville, AL, was designed with sustainability in mind at each stage, including building planning, design, construction, and operations. This project earned the Project of the Year designation for its innovative and thoughtful sustainability achievements, implemented early in design by a robust integrated ....
NASA s Mars Helicopter Succeeds In Historic First Flight By Issam AHMED 04/19/21 AT 8:20 AM NASA successfully flew its tiny helicopter Ingenuity on Mars early Monday, the first powered flight on another planet and a feat a top engineer called our Wright brothers moment. At 3:34 am Eastern Time (0734 GMT), the four pound (1.8 kilogram) rotorcraft lifted off, hovered 10 feet (three meters) above the Martian surface, then came back to rest after 39.1 seconds. Data and images from the autonomous flight were transmitted 173 million miles (278 million kilometers) back to Earth where they were received by NASA s array of ground antennas and processed more than three hours later. ....
Nasa s Mars helicopter takes flight, first for another planet 19 Apr, 2021 11:20 AM 4 minutes to read Nasa s experimental Mars helicopter Ingenuity lands on the surface of Mars. Photo / AP AP By: Marcia Dunn Nasa s experimental Mars helicopter rose from the dusty red surface into the planet s thin air on Monday, achieving the first powered flight on another planet. The triumph was hailed as a Wright Brothers moment. The mini 1.8-kilogram copter named Ingenuity, in fact, carried a bit of wing fabric from the 1903 Wright Flyer, which made similar history at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. Altimeter data confirms that Ingenuity has performed its first flight, the first flight of a powered aircraft on another planet, said the helicopter s chief pilot back on Earth, Havard Grip, his voice breaking as his teammates erupted in cheers. ....
World April 5, 2021 WASHINGTON: Nasa’s Ingenuity mini-helicopter has been dropped on the surface of Mars in preparation for its first flight, the US space agency said. The ultra-light aircraft had been fixed to the belly of the Perseverance rover, which touched down on the Red Planet on February 18. “MarsHelicopter touchdown confirmed!” Nasa’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory tweeted Saturday. “Its 293 million mile (471 million kilometer) journey aboard @NasaPersevere ended with the final drop of 4 inches (10 centimeter) from the rover’s belly to the surface of Mars today. Next milestone? Survive the night.” A photograph accompanying the tweet showed Perseverance had driven clear of the helicopter and its “airfield” after dropping to the surface. ....
