CSIRO report on edible insects demonstrates the 'wacky priorities' in Canberra

Nationals Senator Matt Canavan says a lengthy report being developed by the CSIRO on edible insects demonstrates the “wacky priorities” which are sometimes on display in Canberra.

“Australians spend about $10 million on edible insects at the moment, but that’s nothing compared to the $10 billion beef industry we have,” he said.

“But apparently it’s worth the focus of our premier industrial science organisation to be looking into how we should all be eating more crickets, cicadas and other insects to save the planet, in their words to reduce global greenhouse gasses.

“It just shows the wacky priorities that we have sometimes down there in Canberra, they have got to be reined in.

“This is out of control and your taxes should be going to stuff which actually matters and can make a difference in this country, not these side projects, the pet projects of certain people”.

Nationals won crucial by-election but 'cannot just rely on Labor being worse'

Nationals Senator Matt Canavan says despite the party’s win at the Upper Hunter by-election at the weekend the Coalition “can do better” and needs to ensure it actually represents the working-class voters in the region.

“There are still large parts of the electorate that are looking, are shopping for other parties,” he said.

“About half the electorate did not vote for either the Labor Party, or the Nationals, the Coalition candidate in this election”.

Mr Canavan said he “sensed a lot of frustration” among voters he talked to at the weekend over the “lack of action” surrounding coal fired power and concerns about net zero emissions targets being adopted “willy-nilly” and “what that means for their jobs”.

That triggered a cascade of flow-on events, including the disconnection of multiple transmission lines, and other generators, along with a huge ‘frequency excursion‘, in which the normal operating state of the grid begins to stray outside safe parameters.
Nearly half a million customers were disconnected, including Brisbane airport, sewage pumps in the Gold Coast, Gold Coast University Hospital (which had to rely on backup generators) and traffic lights. “About 360 traffic intersections across the Brisbane metro region lost power just after 2:00pm, causing “chaos” for drivers ahead of school pick-up time”, wrote the ABC.
