Ann Nickerson and Bryan of Norwich at St. Vincent de Paul Place in Norwich. Nickerson was homeless for 7 years and is now living in an apartment. She volunteers full time at the soup kitchen. Bryan was homeless from May until December 11 when a couple offered him a couch to sleep on in one of their properties. At the moment, all the rooms in this house are rented to formerly homeless people, or those in transition. (photo submitted)

Purchases of ladies’ purses has led to an effort to “bag” hunger in the Rose City. Some 450 of the donated items were given away for recommended $10 donations each, with all proceeds given to Norwich Human Services in the form of supermarket gift cards for the needy.
The project was the brainchild of the city’s Director of Planning and Neighborhood Services, Deanna Rhodes. She says city Assistant Planner Dan Daniska was moving, and he discovered bins of purses, most of which were still sealed unopened in plastic, that his ex-wife received several years ago as part of a fund-raiser for the schools. The items were left over from that effort, and had been sitting in the house for three years. ....

The Day - In a dark time, bright lights here - News from southeastern Connecticut

Published December 28. 2020 4:34PM

The Day and theday.com have a longstanding holiday tradition of publishing a series on interesting local people who come to our attention  or more often, whom the newsroom seeks out, because the subjects are typically not in the limelight. The articles share a theme, and the one for 2020 was crystal clear: people who stepped up to help others in this difficult year. They are the bright lights of 2020.
Eleven articles in all, done by Day reporters and photojournalists, recount the response of people, through their jobs or volunteering, to the familiar litany of hardship: pandemic deaths, emergency calls, recuperation, hunger, job loss, evictions and no way to pay the rent; and in the aftermath of the killing of George Floyd, the need to re-assert the pervasiveness of racism. The effects of pandemic and protest often overlapped. ....

Area homeless who died in 2020 remembered

NORWICH - Mourners stood silently in a circle clutching a single candle and photos of deceased area homeless people earlier this week to remember 13 homeless and formally homeless who died in the region this year.
The 18th annual Homeless Persons Memorial was moved from the basement to the parking lot at Saint Vincent de Paul Place due to COVID-19 concerns.
Lee-Ann Gomes, Norwich s Human Services director, read the names to about 30 attending and added a memory of each person they were memorializing.
We are paying tribute to the people that have either been homeless at the time of their death or been homeless in the past, Julie Way, outreach case manager at the Saint Vincent de Paul Place soup kitchen, said. At the time of some of their deaths they were inside and safe but many of them spent many many months or even years outside.      ....

As a business reporter, I write about small businesses opening and closing, manufacturing, food and drink, labor issues and economic data. I also do some education reporting, covering colleges in southeastern Connecticut and regional K-12 issues.
