13 people go on trial over cyberbullying, death threats against French teen

Thirteen people are set to go on trial in Paris over accusations of cyberbullying and sending death threats to a French teen, The Associated Press reported on Thursday.
An 18-year-old who identifies herself online as Mila was targeted by the defendants in 2020 after posting various videos on TikTok and Instagram that were critical of Islam and the Quran.
Mila received death threats and online abuse from the posts, which led to her being put under police protection and switching schools.

One of defendants in trial threatened Mila with a similar fate as that of Samuel Paty, who was beheaded in 2020 after showing his class caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad, according to the AP. ....

Bullies don t just hang around playgrounds. Nowadays, their preferred stomping grounds are the hallowed halls of social media. Conveniently, once they release their electronic venom, it quickly spreads for thousands if not millions to witness.
Whether it s true or not matters very little once released into the wild abyss of the internet becoming nearly impossible to correct. This behavior shuts down conversation, pushes us further apart, alienates and prevents us from solving issues if we were willing to engage in open and honest dialogue.

Social networking platforms have been cracking down on cyber bullying with tools that automatically detect offensive comments. Instagram, for example, launched an artificial intelligence-powered feature in 2019 designed to check for abusive comments and notify users about it before they can post them.
TikTok announced today two new similar capabilities that it says are aimed at promoting kindness on the platform. One of these features is meant to warn you before you post an inappropriate or unkind comment. This comes in the form of a pop-up prompt that asks you to reconsider and edit your comment before posting it. It will also warn you if TikTok detects words that may violate its community guidelines. However, this does not absolutely prevent you from making offensive comments since you can post them anyway. ....

The support provided for students who are bullied varies from university to university. But, overall, policy-based support is lacking.
The numbers found in our recent study are worrying. Only 66% of university policies defined bullying and 69% mentioned cyberbullying. Only 23% provided contact details for students to report the bullying to their university.
The study assessed universities’ policies for quality and usability of content. This revealed an important problem in addition to the overall lack of information. Where these policies exist, they lack accurate and usable information.
Cyber bullying is on the rise but it isn’t mentioned in nearly a third of university anti-bullying policies. ....
