Commonwealth Journalists Association urges India to protect journalists


The Commonwealth Journalists Association (CJA) on Monday urged the Indian government to honour its international commitments to the Commonwealth and the United Nations and ensure that the media is free to play its constitutional role as a guardian of the public interest and in holding elected governments to account.
The CJA, a 43-year-old organisation advocating press freedom, called on the relevant authorities to withdraw the First Information Reports (FIRs) issued against leading editors and journalists for their coverage of the farmers protest in Delhi on January 26.
The CJA is particularly alarmed at the use of laws pertaining to sedition and criminal conspiracy against journalists who were simply doing their job, reporting events as they happened. Many of these laws are of colonial origin and in urgent need of reform, reads the CJA statement. ....

NEW DELHI: The Editors Guild of India on Monday expressed concern over the incarceration of freelance journalist Mandeep Punia who was reporting on the farmers protest at Singhu border, saying the arrest was an attempt to muzzle courageous voices of independent scribes.
In a statement, the EGI demanded immediate release of Punia and Delhi Police restore circumstances in which the media can report without fear or favour. ....

Journalists' bodies condemn FIRs against senior editors over coverage of Republic Day violence


New Delhi: The News Broadcasters Association (NBA) strongly condemned Monday the registration of FIRs against senior editors and journalists over the coverage of the farmers’ protest and the ensuing violence on Republic Day here. The NBA demanded that the FIRs be quashed.
Six journalists – Mrinal Pande, Rajdeep Sardesai, Vinod Jose, Zafar Agha, Paresh Nath and Anant Nath – along with Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, have been booked by police. They have been booked in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, over their alleged ‘misleading’ tweets on the violence during the farmers’ tractor rally.
In a statement, the said it is of the opinion that both the print and electronic media have been covering the farmers’ protests on the outskirts of Delhi in a fair, balanced and objective manner. ....

Farm Law Protests: Freelance Journalist Mandeep Punia Sent To 14 Day Judicial Custody

Singhu border was presented before Court number 2 (Tihar Jail) by Delhi Police and the
Metropolitan Magistrate Akhil Malik has sent him to
14-Day Judicial Custody.
As per the media reports, Punia was detained by the Delhi Police yesterday for allegedly misbehaving with an official on duty at the protest site while he was covering the farmers protest and subsequent clashes which took place at Singhu border.
It may be noted that another journalist, Dharmender Singh of
Online News India, was also picked up by the police along with Punia, however, Singh was later on allowed to go after he showed his identity card. ....

A Delhi court on Sunday rejected the bail plea of journalist Mandeep Punia and sent him to 14 days of judicial custody, his lawyers told
Scroll.in. The metropolitan magistrate court listed his bail application for hearing on Monday and asked the investigating officer in the case to file his response.
Punia, a freelance journalist, was detained by Delhi Police from the Capital’s Singhu border on Saturday evening. In a First Information Report filed in the early hours of Sunday, he was charged under Sections 186, 353, 332 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code. The sections pertain to obstructing public servants from discharging duty, causing hurt to public servants while discharging duty and endangering human life. ....
