THUNDER BAY – Hockey may be on hold, but Thunder Bay’s Nicholas DeGrazia looks like he’s headed for a pretty good year.
The Rayside-Balfour Canadians centre was given a ‘B’ grade in the National Hockey League Central Scouting Bureau’s mid-season players to watch report, one of nine players skating with a Canadian Junior Hockey league club to receive a mark. ....

Jean Zeleny

On Saturday, December 19, 2020, our mom Jean Zeleny, at the age of 99 years passed away peacefully in St Joseph’s Hospital. She was born in the “Coal Dock” area of Fort William on March 2, 1921, the youngest child of Nicholai and Maria Cherniwchan. The name was Anglicized to Chanook when her older brother John went to School. Mom attended Vocational High School & the Ukrainian School at Prosvita.
Although her first language in those early years was Ukrainian, she was completely bilingual… She had outstanding marks in both the English & Ukrainian schools, but in Grade 10 she had to leave school because her mother needed help at home. Her dad had died 3 years before in January of 1933, and her mother had to work to support the family. With her brother’s John & Bill working outside the home to bring in much needed money, she did the household chores of cooking and cleaning. Everyone carried their weight to support the family. ....

Randy Fernandez appointed to SC4 Board of Trustees

The board made the appointment in a special meeting on Nov. 30.
Six community members submitted letters of interest for the position, including Alphonso Amos, chair of Black Lives Matter Port Huron; Fernandez; Michael Goforth, who finished third in the five-person race for two seats on the board in the Nov. 3 election; Bill Gratopp, the former District 7 county commissioner, and Debra McNair, who finished fifth out six candidates for three seats on the board of Port Huron Area School District on Nov. 3.

I applied because I truly care about SC4, said Fernandez via email after his appointment. I did not lobby for the position. I wanted to give back to an institution that has been good to me, my five siblings, my two sons, nieces and nephews who have all attended SC4. I have very, very fond memories of when I went there over 40 years ago. ....
