A Lake City man arrested earlier this year for alleged drug trafficking was sentenced to probation Tuesday after pleading guilty to reduced charges. According to Carroll County District Court records, 33-year-old Nicholas Russell Pickering pled guilty to three counts of possession of methamphetamine, serious misdemeanors. He was ordered to serve one year in jail and pay $430 in fines for each count, with the terms to be served concurrently. However, the combined three-year sentence was suspended as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors. Instead, Pickering was placed on probation for three years to the Iowa Department of Correctional Services. Pickering was arrested twice by the Carroll Police Department on Nov. 24, 2020 and Feb. 17 after law enforcement located narcotics, baggies and scales in his possession on both occasions. ....

According to Carroll County District Court records, 33-year-old Nicholas Russell Pickering was indicted in February for possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver, a class C felony, and again in April on an identical count from a separate incident. Authorities allege drugs and narcotic-related equipment were found in his vehicle during a Nov. 24 traffic stop in Carroll. He was arrested Feb. 17 on an outstanding warrant and had narcotics, baggies and a scale with him at the time. As part of his agreement with prosecutors, the charges will be combined into a single court case, and Pickering will plead guilty to first-offense possession of methamphetamine, a serious misdemeanor. A hearing to accept his plea is scheduled for Tuesday, June 1 ....
The second trial for a Lake City man charged in Carroll County District Court with drug trafficking has been scheduled for this summer. According to court records, 33-year-old Nicholas Russell Pickering’s not guilty plea to possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver, a class C felony, was filed last week, and a judge has signed an order setting his jury trial to begin on Tuesday, July 13 with a pretrial conference June 28. Pickering was arrested on Feb. 17 by the Carroll Police Department after he was found to be in possession of narcotics, unused baggies and a scale. Pickering was scheduled to go to trial next week on a separate drug trafficking charge. However, an order scheduling a plea hearing for May 3 was filed Monday, so it is unlikely that case will go before a jury. Between the two charges, Pickering faces a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in prison and $20,000 in fines. ....
