Pharma stocks to buy: Nithya Balasubramanian's top 3 pharma stock picks

Sun Pharma,
Cipla and Gland Pharma are the three largecap pharma stocks on which Nithya Balasubramanian of Sanford Bernstein is bullish on. Edited excerpts from an interview:
What are your top picks in the pharma pack? Which stocks do you think can get rerated?
We cover mostly largecap names. Our top picks right now are Sun Pharma, Cipla and Gland Pharma. The valuations are slightly at an elevated level, but we believe that there is a possibility of continued growth and momentum in earnings. This will be appreciated by the market as well.
Sun Pharma s potential in the specialty business is undervalued. ....

Pharma stocks to buy: 6 pharma stocks to bet on amid Covid 2.0

Nithya Balasubramanian, Director, Sanford Bernstein, says stocks like Cipla, Zydus Cadila, Biocon, Glenmark, Dr Reddy’s and Gland Pharma are among those that are likely to benefit in the pandemic. Edited excerpts from an interview:
Which end of the Indian pharma space you are excited about both in terms of growth and margin sustainability? APIs, vaccine makers or biosimilars?
Biosimilars is very exciting in terms of opportunity. Around $60 billion worth of biologics are going off patent which is a significant opportunity. Unfortunately, most companies in India have not invested in addressing the first wave of opportunity. Other than Biocon, there is barely anyone with a significant portfolio of biosimilars. Lupin has a few of them while Aurobindo and Dr Reddy s Lab are working on it. All of them are likely to be late in the market in the first wave. Biosimilars does not seem to be a meaningful opportunity for most large cap companies today in the near to mid term. ....

Just how scary is the COVID outbreak in India right now?

(Kiyoshi Ota/Pool Photo via AP)
I have no deep thoughts about this subject but I want to put it on your radar because there’s every indication that it’ll end up as the worst COVID outbreak on Earth since the pandemic began. That distinction currently belongs to Brazil, I think, but India’s population dwarfs that country’s. And India is poorer per capita, which means more people in dire need of hospital care may not be able to get it.
Where the death toll might go on this, God only knows.
The epidemic curve there has turned vertical. And it must be stressed: In a poor nation that isn’t doing much testing (India ranks 116th in tests per capita), the number of confirmed cases only scratches the surface of the true number of infections. ....

There's a new COVID-19 variant in India. How worried should we be?

Apr 19, 2021
With India’s daily tally of COVID-19 infections surging by records, public health experts worry that a new possibly more virulent coronavirus variant could be racing through the crowded nation of more than 1.3 billion people.
The new variant, which has a so-called double mutation, is thought to be fueling India’s deadlier new wave of cases that has made it the world’s second worst-hit country, surpassing Brazil again, and has already begun to overwhelm its hospitals and crematoriums. India has reported more than 14.5 million COVID-19 cases so far and more than 175,600 fatalities.
“This is a variant of interest we are following,” Maria Van Kerkhove, the World Health Organization’s technical lead officer on COVID-19, told reporters Friday. “Having two of these mutations, which have been seen in other variants around the world, are concerning,” she said, adding that there was a similarity with mutations that increase transmission ....
