Church in Baltimore works to make reparations to right wrongs of its racist past


A Bolton Hill church that s reflecting on its racist past is working to right the wrongs it brought to Black Baltimore through reparations.Caroline Armstrong, a member of the Memorial Episcopal Church, spoke with 11 News about the work the church is doing to acknowledge its poor treatment of Black people in Baltimore. I think it s a victory for African Americans, a victory for Memorial and a victory for the church as a whole, Armstrong said.The Rev. Grey Maggiano, the church s rector, said Memorial was an intentionally segregated church up until 1969. When he moved to Baltimore five years ago, he was struck by the very obvious segregation that still exists in the city. Here in Bolton Hill, where the average cost for many of these homes is $400,00, $500,000, $600,000, and you go three blocks over, and it s $100,000, and you go another block and its $50,000, and the racial dynamic in Bolton Hill is mostly white, Maggiano said.And just blocks away from the church, the neighbor ....

Memorial Episcopal Church removes plaques of slave-owning founders


There s been much talk about institutions and businesses doing their part to address racism. A west Baltimore church is beginning a journey to understand its past and atone for the men and women their founding rectors and families enslaved. The Memorial Episcopal Church started its journey in 2017. It wasn t until one of its current leaders revealed her own family had been enslaved that their efforts picked up momentum. I think about the resilience of my folks, how they survived with the work and the labor, said the Rev. Natalie Conway, deacon of Memorial Episcopal Church in Bolton Hill.Conway recounted finding out that her great-great-grandmother, Harriett Cromwell, was enslaved at the Hampton National Historic Site, formerly Hampton Plantation in Towson off Dulaney Valley Road. They called her Hattie, and when she was manumitted in 1828, she had a 1-year-old son with her who was able to go with her.
