During National Fair Housing Month and Second Chance Month, Attorney General Mark Herring and partners in the housing industry are launching a new tool that will reduce housing discrimination and increase housing stability and options for Virginians with previous nonviolent convictions.

State leaders mark anniversary of West Virginia Human Rights Act

CHARLESTON, W.Va. The West Virginia Human Rights Commission recently celebrated the 60th anniversary of the West Virginia Human Rights Act, a statute prohibiting employment and public discrimination based on factors including race, religion, age and disability.
The commission held a presentation last week regarding the signing of the West Virginia Human Rights Act and its importance in West Virginia.
“The truth is we’ve come a long way, but we still have a long ways to go,” said Rev. Darrell Cummings, the West Virginia Human Rights Commission’s chairman. ....

Portland forum to address affordable housing needs in the town and state

PORTLAND - Meeting the state affordable housing goals has been a challenge, according to Mary D. Dickerson, the town’s economic development planner.
“Since the early 1990’s numerous housing developments have been completed without an affordable component, setting the town back in its percentage of affordable housing,” she said.
In 2006, the Planning and Zoning Commission took steps to address the issue.
“The commission voted to allow accessory dwelling units by right, meaning an ADU could be located within an existing home with the issuance of a zoning permit rather than an approval from the PZC,” Dickerson said. ....

Although the month of April is annually observed as Fair Housing Month, the reality for Black America and other people of color is that housing has not significantly changed since the 1968 federal enactment of the Fair Housing Act. Its enactment came seven days after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who had strongly advocated fair and open housing.
But 53 years after an historic enactment, race and place remain the determining factors of who is allowed the opportunity to build wealth, as well as to share wealth’s financial advantages across family generations. ....
