A Nelson Bay man remains behind bars after charged with supplying drugs in the Hunter region. Detectives searched a unit on King Street in Newcastle on Thursday and found methylamphetamine, GHB – often known as ‘liquid ecstasy’ – mobile phones and more than $135,000 in cash. There they arrested a 35-year-old man, and a 28-year-old woman, who was wanted for a breach of bail offence. Both were taken down the road to Newcastle Police Station where the man was charged with a number of offences, including supplying a large commercial quantity of a prohibited drug. The woman was charged with possessing a prohibited drug and breaching bail. ....

About 9am yesterday (Thursday 6 May 2021), officers attached to Hunter Region Enforcement Squad (RES), Northern Region High Visibility Unit and Operation Utah Hunter attended a unit on King Street, Newcastle. Upon arrival at the building, police spoke with and arrested a 35-year-old man. Officers executed a search warrant at the unit where they located and seized methylamphetamine, liquid gamma-Hydroxybutyric (GHB), more than $135,000 cash and mobile phones. The Hunter’s most senior police officer will retire today, calling time on a 40 year career. Assistant Commissioner Max Mitchell will march out of Newcastle Police Station to a guard of honour this afternoon. Growing up in Charlestown, Assistant Commissioner Mitchell joined the force in 1981. Since then he has climbed the ranks and will retire as commander of the Northern Region, which stretches from the Central Coast to Tweed Heads. He was instrumental in the formation of the Transport Command and led a group of NSW officers on a mission to Christchurch after the deadly 2011 earthquake. There will be changed traffic and parking conditions on Church Street, outside Newcastle Police Station, on Thursday while the retirement celebrations take place. ....
