Only one Midlands hospital gets an A safety grade in watchdog s new report card

Apr. 29 One Midlands hospital stands out in the safety grades released by a medical watchdog group Thursday.
Prisma Health Baptist Parkridge continues to be ranked as one of the safest hospitals in South Carolina, according to the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade. The Columbia hospital received the highest grade from the Leapfrog Group, which issues biannual safety rankings.
Since 2012, the Leapfrog Group has published Hospital Safety Scores twice a year once in the spring and once during the fall to create transparency in the U.S. health system. The rating is focused on errors, accidents, injuries and infections. ....

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - Nothing in Lee Foster’s 31 years of service as Newberry County sheriff prepared him for the battle he faced at the beginning of this year.
“The bad part about it is, if it’s a man with a gun, I can fight that guy, I was helpless,” said Sheriff Lee Foster.
In January Sheriff Foster tested positive for COVID-19 and would eventually spend 16 days in the hospital with severe symptoms. ....

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - In the face of record-breaking COVID-19 hospitalizations in South Carolina this week, hospitals across the state are reaching breaking points when it comes to the number of beds available and the staff to man those beds.
On Thursday, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control reported that 2,427 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized and 84% of all beds are in use.
Nurses at Newberry County Memorial Hospital said all of their COVID patient beds are filled as of Thursday. The said the nurses are working around the clock to care for them all, but the surge in hospitalizations the last few weeks has left nurses mentally and physically exhausted and the hospital with difficult decisions to make. ....

NEWBERRY, S.C. Citing the rise in positive COVID-19 cases and record-setting numbers of hospitalizations, Newberry County Memorial Hospital has cancelled visiting hours for patients.
Not long after South Carolina s Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) released its daily report of coronavirus data, Newberry Hospital announced it will not allow any visitors until further notice.
As per the hospital, a patient can have one person designated as the point of contact to receive health updates provided by a staff member or physician. ....

Dec. 14 Two Midlands hospitals stand out in safety grades released by a medical watchdog group Monday.
