Summer Staycay

School’s out, temperatures are rising, and the CDC is letting more masks come off, but you’re not alone if you’re still on the fence about traveling anywhere in a world where the pandemic is still very much a thing. Plus, who needs the jet lag? Lucky for us, Fort Worth has never been more equipped to host a

Summer sippin’ and skinny dippin’ aren’t synonymous, but one can most certainly lead to the other. Anyone who hasn’t been to the Stockyards in a year might be surprised to see that Mule Alley is no longer a parking lot. The long and narrow-ish space between the historic mule barns is now a bustling development full of new restaurants, bars, and retail spaces. Some businesses like Avoca Coffee Roasters and Cowtown Winery are well known to locals, while others like Provender Hall and recently opened Sidesaddle Saloon are the respective ventures of local restaurateurs Marcus Pasley (Piattello Italian Kitchen, Clay Pigeon) and Sarah Castillo (Taco Heads, Tinie’s Mexican Cuisine).

Texas Monthly looks a little different this year. Instead of the usual list of 10 establishments, food editor Pat Sharpe focuses on favorite takeout dishes and drinks from across the Lone Star State, along with spotlighting three of the year's most exciting new openings.
In total, the article covers 30 restaurants across seven regions, divided into categories such as starters and sides, sandwiches, entrees, sweets, and cocktails. All offer to-go. To be eligible for the list, establishments must have opened between December 1, 2019 and December 1, 2020.

Ways the pandemic may change dining out forever

How to prepare for the post-pandemic dining scene

Dining Do Over
Restaurant experiences have changed dramatically due to the pandemic. Though over 110,000 U.S. restaurants have shuttered since COVID-19 swept the country, those still standing have used this time to reassess. Marcus Paslay, chef and restaurateur of Provender Hall and other Texas eateries, says, “For the fortunate, the pandemic has distilled restaurants down to what is most important [for their businesses to run]." That’s sometimes been quite a surprise. As Sarah Krathen, chef and owner of L’itos in New York City puts it, “Who would have thought three Michelin-star restaurants would do takeout?” We spoke to many in the food service industry to share with us their observations and predictions for a post-COVID-19 world.

The truth of 2020: Fort Worth saw plenty of restaurant flops, but also a few finds

The truth of 2020: Fort Worth saw plenty of restaurant flops, but also a few finds

Dec. 29—FORT WORTH — If nothing else, 2020 proved that the bigger restaurants are, the faster they fall.

A $3 million craft brewery was among the first and most expensive of a dozen Fort Worth restaurants to close as other eateries downsized to curbside pickup and drive-thrus during the COVID-19 recession.
But more restaurants still opened than closed, with new owners taking over leases at closeout prices and looking optimistically toward 2021 and a vaccine.
The demise of the Deep Ellum Funkytown Fermatorium is the biggest flop of 2020. But it was not solely the result of the coronavirus slowdown — the West 7th area simply grew oversaturated with suds. A foolish $2.5 million location of now-bankrupt Punch Bowl Social had closed in 2019.
