Lifewtr and Häagen-Dazs Amplify Marginalized Voices Through Hollywood Partnerships

Last year, there was much discussion about what constituted “real action” when it came to businesses taking a stand against systemic bias. Supportive corporate social media messages are nice and all, but genuine change requires opportunities for marginalized voices to be heard and shared. Some consumer brands are now working to bring more of these stories and talents to light, with the help of some of Hollywood’s biggest storytellers.
This spring, Issa Rae and Lena Waithe are partnering with Lifewtr and Häagen-Dazs, respectively, to support underrepresented artists both in front of and behind the camera.

PURCHASE, N.Y. LIFEWTR, a premium bottled water brand committed to advancing and showcasing sources of creativity, has partnered with writer, producer and actress Issa Rae for the launch of Life Unseen, the brand’s new platform in the fight for fair representation in the arts. Marking the LIFEWTR brand’s latest endeavor to amplify the unique work and perspectives of diverse creatives, Life Unseen seeks to raise awareness of the systemic disparities that continue to stifle equitable access and exposure across the arts, celebrate the work of diverse creatives and help cultivate new opportunities for the next generation. As one of the industry’s most vocal advocates of diverse representation, Issa Rae’s collaboration with LIFEWTR for Life Unseen aptly signals one of the brand’s largest campaigns since its inception in 2017.
When TT the Artist started working on âDark City Beneath the Beatâ in 2011 â an hourlong musical documentary highlighting the Baltimore club music and dance culture featuring Baltimore artists â there were times she didnât think the project was going to happen because she didnât have enough money.
âThere were years that went by where I couldnât even figure out what the next step was, but through grants, I was able to pick up the pieces up and really have the budgets and means to actually create the film,â she said.
Little did she know her musical â which was funded in part by grants from Saul Zaentz Innovation Fund at Johns Hopkins and Rubys Artist Grant by the Robert W. Deutsch Foundation â was going to hit the big stage 10 years later. âDark Cityâ will premiere on Netflix Thursday. According to a press release, the campaign will “expose representational blind spots in the creative industry through a first-of-its-kind research study” and “uplift the creative expressions of 20 diverse artists” who are considered minorities from marginalized groups and identify as people of color, persons with disabilities, members of the LGBTQ+ community and women.
