ISLAMABAD: The government has called a meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) on Monday (today) to consider allowing an intervention price of about Rs5,000 per 40kg for cotton, which has arguably been necessitated by a sharp decline in production, besides clearing a dozen supplementary grants so close to the passage of federal budget by parliament.
To be presided over by Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin, the ECC meeting is expected to approve a notification about minimum indicative prices of tobacco and revision of cess rates on the commodity for the year 2021-22. ....

ISLAMABAD: The cabinet on Tuesday consented to the decisions taken on March 31 by the cabinet committee on institutional reforms about the rationalisation of manpower running the federal government machinery.
Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Institutional Reforms Dr Ishrat Hussain presented the recommendations of the committee regarding the volume of the federal government in terms of employees, working mechanism, manpower in different ministries and departments and their rationalisation.
Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry, at a press conference following the cabinet meeting, said the total expenditure of the federal government was Rs175 billion in 2010. But, despite the 18th Constitution Amendment under which many ministries and institutions were devolved to the provinces, the total expense of the federal government rose to Rs500 billion between 20 ....

ISLAMABAD: While granting its nod for laying off 25 percent workforce or around 3,500 through Voluntary Separation Scheme (VSS), the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet Wednesday approved restructuring plan of Rs457 billion for cash-bleeding Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).
The meeting approved Rs330 million for the Ministry of Defence for the maintenance of aircraft. This restructuring plan for PIA will be implemented after getting approval from the federal cabinet. The ECC directed the authorities concerned to further fine tune the restructuring plan and reconcile figures before presenting before the cabinet.
The PIA required Rs13 billion from the government for implementing VSS in order to lay off around 25 percent of a total workforce of 14,000, indicating that around 3,500 working staff will be relieved under the restructuring plan. When contacted, Adviser to PM on ....
