Tax ombudsman suspects corrupt practices behind low offshore recoveries
ISLAMABAD:
The government could recover a meagre $30 million (Rs4.6 billion) out of cases of billions of dollars referred by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), prompting a state institution to launch probe into complaint of malpractices.
Average tax recovery in 1,150 cases by three zones was just Rs4 million or $25,800 per case owing to poor performance of the Karachi Zone of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), according to official documents seen by The Express Tribune. The official record shows that progress on thousands of offshore tax evasion cases was painstakingly slow despite Prime Minister Imran Khan’s declaration that the recovery of stolen and tax-evaded offshore money was his high priority. ....

ISLAMABAD: Minister for Finance and Revenue Hammad Azhar on Monday held a virtual meeting with International Monetary Fund s (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva where she acknowledged the need for the welfare of people as the focus of all policy endeavors.
Had a productive virtual meeting with IMF MD on the state of Pakistan s economy and implementation of reforms. Grateful that she acknowledged the positive economic indicators and the need to keep the welfare of people of Pakistan as the focus of all our policy endeavors, Hammad said after the meeting.
Georgieva held the virtual meeting with Hammad Azhar and Governor State Bank of Pakistan Dr Reza Baqir. ISLAMABAD: While granting its nod for laying off 25 percent workforce or around 3,500 through Voluntary Separation Scheme (VSS), the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet Wednesday approved restructuring plan of Rs457 billion for cash-bleeding Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).
The meeting approved Rs330 million for the Ministry of Defence for the maintenance of aircraft. This restructuring plan for PIA will be implemented after getting approval from the federal cabinet. The ECC directed the authorities concerned to further fine tune the restructuring plan and reconcile figures before presenting before the cabinet.
The PIA required Rs13 billion from the government for implementing VSS in order to lay off around 25 percent of a total workforce of 14,000, indicating that around 3,500 working staff will be relieved under the restructuring plan. When contacted, Adviser to PM on ....
