My work has given me the opportunity to speak to hundreds of Oregonians about their experience within the state s mental health system during the COVID-19 pandemic. I regularly hear the heartbreaking, frustrating stories from patients and their loved ones, and all seem to have one thing in common: There is a lack of psychiatric services and community resources available for those who are struggling with mental illness and addiction.
The pandemic has exposed the extent of the mental health crisis for nearly every family. During the pandemic, four in ten adults reported experiencing severe anxiety or depression but services for those in need of critical care did not expand to meet the need. Rates of suicidal ideation are highest among youth, especially LGBTQ+ youth. According to Mental Health America, in September 2020, more than half of 11- to 17-year-o ....

Robert Garcia-Geldman faces first-degree robbery charges after he allegedly stabbed a man and stole his wallet.
Portland Police have made an arrest after a man was allegedly stabbed after he refused to give up his wallet while waiting for the train in Northeast Portland.
Robert C. Garcia-Gedman, 23, no fixed address, faces charges of first- and second-degree robbery, as well as second-degree assault, according to Multnomah County Circuit Court records.
Police found victim Ethan Webster bleeding heavily from numerous stab wounds on his back and right side at the Gateway transit platform, 1101 N.E. 99th Ave., around 4 a.m. on Wednesday, April 7, according to a probable cause affidavit. ....

Trevor Hertz faces first-degree bias crime charge for confrontation in Gresham hotel parking lot, court docs say.
A Portland man faces a first-degree hate crime charge after police say he followed a couple to their Gresham hotel, mouthing threats and a racial slur used against Black people.
Trevor James Hertz, 27, of Northeast Portland, faces charges of first-degree bias crime commonly known as a hate crime as well as unlawful use of a weapon and attempt to commit second-degree assault, according to court records.
On Monday, March 29, a husband and wife called the Gresham Police Department, saying the driver of a blue SUV had attempted to hit their vehicle multiple times and trailed them to their hotel, according to a probable cause affidavit filed in Multnomah County Court. ....

The Portland City Council pares back homeless shelter options when approving Street to Shelter Continuum Project on Wednesday.
The City Council voted on a number of measures related to homelessness in Portland including amending the city s proposed Shelter to Housing Continuum Project to explicitly prohibit outdoor shelters in natural areas, parks or park parking lots on Wednesday, March 31.
The council s housing emergency declaration was also extended for another year.
The council voted to amend and approve the Shelter to Housing Continuum Project, which is intended to expand shelter and housing options throughout the city by changing zoning codes to allow for more managed homeless camps, among other things. This would allow organizations and nonprofits to provide hygiene services, trash collection and wrap-around social services. ....

Oregon Department of Transportation analysis finds many drivers already avoid Interstate 205 during rush hour.
The slog on Interstate 205 already increases cut-through traffic on local roads by as much as 20% to 30% a day but tolls could prevent driver diversion by changing travel habits and offering a smoother commute for those who remain.
So says the Oregon Department of Transportation, in a new report released by the state agency as it makes the case for electronic tolling on the Abernethy Bridge and elsewhere.
Fears of toll-dodging drivers following their dashboard navigators onto cramped back roads have been voice by many, but ODOT argues the problem is already here, with the report finding consistent evidence of rerouting off of I-205 and onto local streets during peak periods across a range of origin/destination travel patterns. ....
