IRClass chief Sharma on receiving India's highest maritime award


“For sustained and outstanding contribution to the maritime industry.” These were the words that Arun Sharma, executive chairman of classification society Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass), could see engraved on the Varuna Award trophy as it was presented to him at a virtual ceremony earlier this week.
The industry veteran of nearly half a century had been unanimously nominated for the country’s highest maritime award on the 58
th edition of India’s National Maritime Day by three maritime industry bodies – Institute of Marine Engineers, Company of Master Mariners and Foreign Owners’ Representatives and Ship Managers’ Association (FOSMA).
The award also recognised Sharma’s “strong leadership skills and decision-making that has inspired positive changes to the industry”. History of wharves at Falmouth Docks: wood brought from Australia


The evolution of Falmouth Docks is a subject very close to my heart having spent decades researching all aspects relating to the facility. The building of the old wooden wharves is of particular interest.
Silley Cox purchased 98 acres of harbour fundus from the Duchy of Cornwall estate during the economic slump in the early 1930s.
Falmouth Harbour Commissioners gave approval to docks plans for building the new Empire wharf in November 1931. A month later the heavy lift vessel Belpareil arrived in Australia to load timber at Sydney and Brisbane for Falmouth.
Determined to support inter-Empire trade in 1931 Docks boss John Silley had placed an order worth £30,000 for Turpentine piles and decking with two Australian firms. ....
