The Tory offensive against freedom of speech

FREE speech and freedom of expression are under attack from the Conservative government.
Historically the left has been the champion of these rights against governments and states which have tried to constrain dissent through legislation and delegitimisation.
The Johnson government has already passed laws and is proposing new laws which will restrict freedom of expression.
This is a matter of concern for the whole trade union and labour movement. It is time to reaffirm the left’s tradition of defending freedom of speech and expression.
The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill is going through Parliament.
The Institute of Employment Rights has described the 300-page Bill as a “Trojan horse” within which a wide range of measures are proposed which directly threaten the rights to demonstrate.  ....

Covid-19 must be wake-up call to reinforce workplace safety, unions warn

THE Covid-19 crisis must be a wake-up call on workplace safety, unions warned today as shocking data revealed that the number of labour inspectors has been cut by a third since the Tories came to power.
Research by the European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) found that Britain now has 32 per cent fewer inspectors than in 2010.
The trend has been replicated across Europe as a result of austerity, the ETUC said, leaving workplaces less prepared for the pandemic and hitting the vulnerable hardest.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which has suffered a real-terms funding cut of 58 per cent since 2010, recorded 111 workplace deaths between April 2019 and March 2020. ....

STUC Conference '21 Workers' rights should be treated as a health issue

WORKERS’ rights must be treated as a public health issue due to the acceleration of insecure work across Britain, socialists said ahead of this week’s STUC Congress.
Speaking at the Morning Star’s fringe event on Sunday night, trade union representatives and employment rights experts said that workers in a number of sectors have been taken advantage of throughout the pandemic, describing bosses’ behaviour as a “corporate offensive against our rights.”
But union organisers were able to giving examples of action taken to protect members over the past year during the meeting, held in conjunction with the Institute of Employment Rights (IER), which focused on Covid-19, the law and workers’ rights.  ....

Inside the office during Covid-19: The hidden gap in Boris Johnson's pandemic response

Inside the office during Covid-19: The hidden gap in Boris Johnson’s pandemic response
Coronavirus rules have always allowed employers to keep workers in offices – which have had more outbreaks than any other workplace.
Every day, Dave , a 32-year-old operations manager for a vehicle warranty company in Peterborough, goes into his office as usual. His work could be done remotely, but he and three others he manages have been going in throughout the pandemic.
Lacking space at home, and with two children under five, Dave chooses to go in, despite the government’s instructions during lockdowns to work from home. His decision has led others to use the office too. “It’s difficult to keep track and manage people when you’re not physically with them, you can’t see what they’re doing and monitor their workflow,” he says. ....
