IN a welcome move, the government has showed its readiness to withdraw some clauses of the electoral reforms bill on which the opposition and the Election Commission of Pakistan had raised objections. During a meeting of the Senate standing committee on parliamentary affairs, Minister of State Ali Muhammad Khan said the government would not pursue anything which is against the Constitution. The committee has started the process of going over all the clauses of the bill one by one. One of the most important of these clauses pertains to giving the right to vote to overseas Pakistanis. The PTI government has fervently pushed for this initiative while the opposition, although it agrees with the principle, wants greater clarity on the issue. Senate criminalises torture, custodial deaths

The Senate on Monday passed the Torture and Custodial Death (Prevention and Punishment) Bill, 2021 – nearly a month after the opposition rang alarms over “covert omission” of human rights bills from parliamentary agendas.
The bill was tabled by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Senator Sherry Rehman in February last year and was backed by Minister for Human Rights Shireen Mazari.
The bill stipulates that any public servant found involved in torture would face up to 10-year imprisonment and a fine of up to Rs2 million and for custodial death and sexual violence, a fine of Rs3 million along with a life imprisonment sentence. ....
