Published for comment on September 29 with comments due by the end of the year, the Proposal seeks to impose on US nonbank mortgage servicers many of the safety and soundness or prudential standards required of insured depository institutions by federal banking regulators. The goal, it appears, is to “get ahead of the curve” of the potential for mortgage servicer failures resulting from widespread mortgagor delinquencies.
