Nassau County Sheriff's Office remembers its fallen

The piercing radio tone echoed across the lawn in front of the Nassau County Sheriff s Office on Wednesday morning, then a dispatcher read the end of watch roll call for the nine names on a brick wall memorializing those who died on duty there.
The terse dictation included Deputy Joseph Robinson, killed in 1891, and Bailiff Deputy Jack Gwynes, felled by COVID-19 just three months ago and not yet added.
Rest in peace, job well-done, the dispatcher ended.
Fallen Nassau County sheriff s deputies, plus a Florida Highway Patrol trooper, Hilliard constable and Fernandina Beach were all remembered at a 30-minute ceremony under flags flapping at half-mast in the breeze. ....

Nathan Myers (left) hugs Clifford Williams during a press conference announcing their 1976 murder convictions have been overturned Thursday in Jacksonville. The order to vacate the convictions originated from the first ever conviction integrity review unit set up by State Attorney Melissa Nelson.
Florida’s wrongful conviction compensation law isn’t working for the people it is meant to serve. The law provides $50,000 for each year of wrongful incarceration, but it contains exclusionary eligibility criteria, which ultimately bar most exonerees from claiming the compensation they rightfully deserve. The law is so restrictive that only five of the state’s 76 exonerees have been paid since it was passed in 2008.  ....

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville Sheriff Mike Williams voiced his support for new legislation signed Monday by Gov. Ron DeSantis that aims to crack down on those who participate in protests that turn violent.
Williams declined an interview request from News4Jax to talk about the potential impact of the so-called “anti-riot” bill but he did issue a statement.
“I am very pleased that our Governor has demonstrated yet again his support for law enforcement in signing House Bill 1 – the Anti-Riot Bill,” Williams said in a statement Monday about the Republican-backed bill. “Jacksonville, along with the rest of the state is ready to work together to build stronger bridges of trust and cooperation while maintaining public safety. Public Safety is paramount for everyone in Florida – our families, our neighbors and our businesses.” ....

North Carolina pays Ronnie Long $750K for 44 years in prison. Enough?

Other states have similar caps. Mississippi law allows annual payments of $50,000 for each year a person is wrongfully incarcerated but sets a maximum of 10 years payment.
Curtis Flowers, a man who spent 23 years on death row after being convicted in the 1996 shooting deaths of four people in Mississippi, was tried six times, with each trial resulting in an overturned conviction or mistrial.
In 2020, Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch said the state would not try the case a seventh time, leaving Flowers a free man. And in March, a state judge ruled Flowers would receive the state s maximum compensation of $500,000.
Lau said Long s case and those similar highlight the inadequacy in the cap and Long shouldn t have needed a pardon from Gov. Roy Cooper to receive the money. ....
