Pool party to double as gun violence talkback event
The anti-gun violence pool party runs from 12 to 2 p.m. on Saturday at Navarre Park. There will be free food, a DJ and an open discussion with kids on gun violence.

TOLEDO, Ohio Young people have a chance to talk about the recent gun violence they ve witnessed this year at a pool party on Saturday.
This comes after a 17-year-old was killed and 11 people were shot during a block party celebrating the Fourth of July.
Community leaders, along with Lucas County Judge Stacy Cook, are inviting kids to the pool at Navarre Park to hear what they have to say about the violence and how it can be stopped. ....

When Stacy and Quint Cook decided to try their hand at selling smoked cheese about three years ago at Topeka s annual Apple Festival, they never anticipated the success they would experience.
The couple sold out of cheese the first day of the Apple Festival. The Cooks went home, stayed up all night smoking another round of cheese and sold out for a second day.
The Cooks decided to attend a second event and the name and business Stumpy s Smoked Cheese was born.
Since 2017, Stumpy s has grown immensely in its retail presence and started operating a food truck in 2019. The business also has placed an emphasis on its partnerships and supporting local businesses when possible. ....

FEMA housing coming to Mill City

MILL CITY â What had been a tranquil piece of property on the north side of Mill City is now a busy construction zone, with bulldozers shoving dirt and rock and excavators digging large holes as contractors install utilities for 16 manufactured homes provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The homes â fabricated in Texas â will soon be occupied by Santiam Canyon residents from Lyons to Detroit who were displaced by the Labor Day wildfires that destroyed homes, businesses and public and private forestlands.
Mill City Recorder Stacy Cook said the homes are being set on a section of a 6-acre site that will be part of the cityâs new wastewater drainfield. ....
