Community groups vow to continue fight for funding as police budget grows • Long Beach Post News

Organizers released the People’s Budget at a June 22 press conference calling on the city to invest in housing, a right to counsel for renters, new facilities for the city’s seniors and more money for translation services, among other demands.
To do that, a coalition of groups including Black Lives Matter Long Beach, Long Beach Forward, Long Beach Immigrant Rights Coalition and Long Beach Residents Empowered, said the city should reinvest funds from the LBPD and put them into community-serving programs.
“We are all calling for a defunding of the police and that’s the opposite of what happened in this budget,” said Audrena Redmond, an organizer with Black Lives Matter Long Beach. ....

A community coalition in Long Beach will over one free marijuana joint to the first 150 city residents 21 and older who get the jab at an upcoming one-day pop-up clinic. The partnership between the Healthy Long Beach campaign and the Long Beach Collective Association represents dozens of cannabis businesses in the city. LONG BEACH, Calif. Is a “joint” motivation to get the COVID-19 vaccination? Should people be offering a “gateway drug” to entice others into cooperating with vaccine proponents. That is what will be happening in Long Beach as residents who get the jab at a pop-up clinic next week will get some “weed.”
One pre-roll “joint” is available to each resident aged 21 and older who gets vaccinated at Houghton Park on July 24, according to Long Beach Forward, a local group that supports community-based organizations.
In a move that has people rolling their eyes, vaccinated residents will receive a token that can be redeemed for a joint in an effort dubbed “Joints for Jabs LBC,” KTLA reported. ....
