Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board : Coyote Creek South: Wet Prairie-Vernal Pool Restoration Phases : Highlighted Projects : State of Oregon

Challenge
Since the 1850s, Euro-American settlers converted the majority of Willamette valley bottoms to agriculture and residential/urban development. Combined with the exclusion of fire and control of flooding, the resulting habitat loss and fragmentation has imperiled a number of native species.
Project Overview
Restored rare wetland prairie for federally-threatened Streaked Horned Lark and at-risk Red-legged frogs.
Long Tom Watershed Council worked with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife to restore wet prairie for rare wildlife at Coyote Creek South. 99 percent of wet prairies are gone from the Willamette Valley. The project restored a 116-acre wetland system of grassland and vernal pools that provides critical habitat for two at-risk species: Streaked Horned Larks and Red-legged Frogs. Since the restoration project in 2017, the streaked horned lark population has increased and is expected to remain stable at 2-4 breeding pairs at the site. ....

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The Oregon Department of Forestry is putting some of the $5 million it was granted by the Oregon Legislative Emergency Board into reducing wildfire risk in Lane County.
Of 37 total projects statewide, the agency has four in Lane County totaling $481,000.
The projects rely on partnerships to improve community resilience to wildfire and restore and maintain healthy, resilient forests.
For example, a long list of partners is involved in fuels reduction in a project with the South Hills Eugene Fuels Mitigation Collaborative. Long Tom Watershed Council and private landowners are involved in fuels reduction projects in Crow, Fern Ridge, Noti, Powell Creek and Veneta. ....

Report shows decrease in pesticide concentrations in Amazon Creek

Register-Guard
A report on pesticide levels in Oregon waterways shows detection of harmful chemicals monitored in Amazon Creek declined in frequency and concentration over two years.
The Oregon’s Pesticide Stewardship Partnership 2017-19 biennium report showed improvement evidenced by lower concentrations and frequency of detection at 69% of the monitored locations in 10 waterways over the 2015-17 samplings. Frequency of detection and concentration in 14% of monitoring sites were largely unchanged, and about 17% of watersheds showed increases in those water quality measurements.
Three Amazon Creek monitoring sites were shown to have improved and two sites showed no change, according to the report.
The trends, especially related to concentration, are going in the right direction, said Department of Environmental Quality Agency Toxics Coordinator Kevin Masterson. ....
