Why Court Sentenced Dismissed SARS Officer to Death by Hanging

Justice Ohimai Ovbiagele of an Edo State High Court in Benin City, over the weekend sentenced a police constable, Joseph Omotosho, to death by “hanging or chemical infusion” because the police officer was found guilty of the murder of one Benson Obodeh, a car dealer in 2015.
Omotosho and four other members of his team currently on the run were arraigned on an eighth count charge bordering on conspiracy, stealing and murder.
Other defendants in the suit marked: NO. B/CD/48C/2015 are; Adeleke Adedeji, Oniyo Musa, Abena John and Henry Shobowale.
The five defendants who served with the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a police unit that was notorious for its brutality and other forms of human rights abuses were earlier dismissed from the Nigerian police to pave the way for their trial. ....

Edo State High Court in Benin-city, the state capital, has sentenced to death by hanging a dismissed Police Constable, Joseph Omotosho, who was a member of the defunct Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the state police command.
He was accused of conspiring in the extra-judicial killings of a car dealer, Benson Obodeh, along with four others who escaped during the jail break in Benin last year.
The dismissed police constable, Omotosho, along with Corporals Adeleke Adedeji, Abena John, Oniyo Musa, Henry Shobowole were found guilty after undergoing a court trial on an eight-count charge bordering on conspiracy to steal and murder in alleged car theft incident that happened in 2015. ....

On Friday, a dismissed police constable, Joseph Omotosho, was sentenced to death by hanging by a Benin Criminal High Court for his complicity in a case of extra-judicial killing preferred against him and four others at large.
Omotosho, an operative of the defunct Lagos State Police Command Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, was accused of conspiring in the extra-judicial killings of a Benin-based car dealer, Benson Obodeh, alongside four other Prisoners Awaiting Trial, PAT, who escaped during the November 19 jailbreaks in Benin City when hoodlums who hijacked the EndSARS protest broke into the two correctional facilities in the Edo State capital. ....
