Anti-stalking charity and university team up to launch pioneering research centre

THE first student taken on by a centre dedicated to anti-stalking research says she is hopeful her work can help victims’ voices be heard.
Karen Fullerton-Chalmers will study her PhD at the pioneering Centre for Action Against Stalking, a joint venture between the University of the West of Scotland and charity Action Against Stalking, set up by former Glasgow Times Scotswoman of the Year, Ann Moulds.
The official launch of the new centre, revealed by the Glasgow Times last month, will take place today at an international online conference organised by AAS and UWS.
Karen, who is from the east end of Glasgow, said: “I studied criminal justice and law for five years and not once was there a mention of the crime of stalking, and yet according to the Scottish Crime and Justice Survey, 11.8 percent of adults in Scotland experience this. ....

Violent crime in Scotland has fallen by 39% since 2008, new Scottish Government figures have shown.
There were an estimated 194,000 violent crimes committed in Scotland, of the 563,000 total offences, in 2019-20, according to the Scottish Crime and Justice Survey, accounting for 34% of all crimes.
The survey spoke to 5,568 people in Scotland between April 2019 and March 2020, meaning the figures referenced in the 232-page report are estimates with “relatively wide margins of error”.
Violent crime fell from 317,000 in 2008-09, while the proportion of adults who were the victims of crime fell from 20.4% to 11.9% in the same period. ....

Scotland’s Chief Statistician today released the main findings of the 2019/20 Scottish Crime and Justice Survey (SCJS).
The volume of crime in Scotland, including incidents not reported to the police, has fallen by 46% since 2008/09. Most adults did not experience crime in 2019/20. The proportion of adults experiencing crime has decreased from one-in-five to one-in-eight between 2008/09 and 2019/20.

There were an estimated 563,000 crimes in 2019/20, of which 369,000 (66%) were property crimes and 194,000 (34%) were violent crimes. Since 2008/09 property crime has almost halved (down 49%) whilst violent crime has fallen by 39% over the same time period. The 2019/20 SCJS found no statistically significant change in the level of crime (including both violent and property crime) since 2018/19. ....
