Coun. Rick Chiarelli gets his day in court, claims integrity investigation was tainted

Article content
Coun. Rick Chiarelli, currently working for free in the wake of a damning conduct probe into his alleged lewd behaviour, got his day in court on Tuesday when his lawyer tried to convince a three-judge panel that the integrity investigation was biased and should be quashed.
Bruce Sevigny, the lawyer representing Chiarelli, said the integrity investigation is unsalvageable because Mayor Jim Watson and other council members tainted the probe by speaking out against Chiarelli before the integrity commissioner finished an investigative report.

Lawyers for the Ford government delivered arguments in court Wednesday to defend its contentious Bill 197, saying the province was within the rules by passing it without holding public consultations.
The Progressive Conservatives passed Bill 197, which it said was aimed at helping boost Ontario’s economic recovery from COVID-19, last July. The omnibus bill also contained a series of measures unrelated to the pandemic, including a substantial rewrite of Ontario’s environmental rules and an expansion of a controversial land zoning power called a minister’s zoning order, or MZO. ....

Friends of the Foundry released design renderings on Wednesday in collaboration with local architects demonstrating what the future of the Dominion Foundry site could look like.
Community groups, local architects and designers have revealed design concepts for the much-contested Dominion Foundry that would preserve heritage elements while still providing affordable housing.
The designs – one was released February 24 in collaboration with community advocate group Friends of the Foundry and another was unveiled a day later – come after weeks of legal battles and protests over the Ford government’s plan to demolish the West Don Lands site. ....

An Ontario judge has temporarily stopped the province from demolishing a group of heritage buildings at the Dominion Foundry Complex in Toronto s West Donlands pending a decision at the end of February.
In a statement Friday evening, the group Friends of the Foundry says it is very relieved by the decision of Justice David Corbett to protect the buildings from further damage until next month s hearing. Word of the decision comes after crews began tearing down buildings on the provincially owned site on Jan. 18. ....
