A class action suit brought against the current conditions at Her Majesty Prison (HMP) could be successful in the courts once it is filed with supporting documents.
That is according to notable attorney Wendel Robinson, who explained that the banding together of inmates and prison officers could ensure the success of a class action suit.
“A former inmate can always bring an action for damages based on what constitutional rights have been infringed. A class action is good because you will [support] and you will probably get sufficient affidavits from former inmates. You might be able to get from former prison officers as well as inmates what you are experiencing, at the moment, the dilapidated conditions there. ....

The tenure of Justice Iain Morley as a High Court judge in Antigua and Barbuda has come to an end as the Judge has been reassigned to St. Kitts and Nevis.
In recognition of his contribution to the local criminal justice system over the past four years, the Judiciary held a virtual send off for the well-learned barrister on Monday.
Justice Ann-Marie Smith, who recently joined the High Court bench in Antigua as a criminal Judge replacing Justice Stanley John, was the first to thank Justice Morley for his service. ....

Mentally ill man pleads guilty to manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility

A mentally ill man who was charged with murdering a woman in 1997 has admitted to a lesser charge of manslaughter by reason of diminished responsibility when he was arraigned yesterday in the High Court.
Wilson Adams is now convicted of killing 61-year-old Gabrielle Stocker after he slashed her throat and bashed her head while she was relaxing on Runaway Beach 23 years ago.
But the 56-year-old man was declared insane back then and has since been in the Clarevue Psychiatric Hospital.
Now, more than two decades later, he has been officially declared fit to stand trial and his attorney, Wendel Robinson, requested the reduced charge since his mind was impaired at the time of the killing. ....

Judge sets unusual bail conditions for mentally unstable man
The 26-year-old man was kept in state custody for his family’s protection up until September 22
nd,when High Court Judge Iain Morley said he had been “inadvertently released from prison”.
The man had been imprisoned after his grandmother testified earlier this year that he wasn’t well and needed psychiatric evaluation because he had displayed volatile behaviour and was showing signs of suffering from mental health issues.
Last Friday, the man’s mother tried to hold back tears as she told the court that the young man often gets frustrated because he struggles to learn how to read. ....
