A man accused of raping an elderly woman and possessing child pornography five years ago told a judge on Friday he has not been successful in hiring a new lawyer to represent him in the county’s longest pending criminal case. The sexual assault charges filed in 2016 against Jeffrey Martin, 56, accuse him of raping a woman with whom he was staying in Normal. According to authorities, Martin was hired by the woman to work on electronics and she allowed him to stay at her residence. Police allegedly found illegal images on Martin’s computer during a search of the woman’s home as part of the sexual assault investigation.

The first indication that the felony cases could be subject to harsh punishment came in September when Judge William Yoder rejected a negotiated plea agreement worked out between the state and Anthony Crose. Unlike many of his co-defendants, Crose had a pending case (an aggravated DUI) when he was charged with mob action in connection with the looting incidents.

Anthony Crose, 21, was charged in June with four counts of mob action for his involvement in the violence outside Target late May 31 and early June 1. Three of those counts were dismissed by the state, according to online court records. Crose pleaded guilty to the offense as well as charges from May 2019 involving driving under the influence and resisting an officer. According to the probable cause statement, Crose threw rocks and water bottles at Normal officers in the Target parking lot. Police do not believe Crose entered the store at any point to participate in the looting.

Anthony Crose was the first of more than 40 people to be sentenced by Judge William Yoder on charges related to the summer break-ins and thefts at several businesses, following the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. The large crowds seen on security video storming Target in Normal also damaged police vehicles and pelted officers with frozen water bottles, according to police.
