I would like to congratulate Valerie Dehombreux for seven wonderful years serving as our principal of McDowell Mountain Elementary School in our Fountain Hills School District! Ms. Dehombreux (or “Ms. D,” as the students and teachers affectionately call her), you will be dearly missed and we deeply thank you for your service.
Ms. D had huge shoes to fill when she started serving as principal after Ms. Joanne Meehan’s 30 wonderful years of service at our elementary school. Ms. D came in with a tremendous attitude and enhanced our school in many ways. She added a new data-driven approach and provided tremendous metrics. One of her most outstanding commitments was working tirelessly for McDowell Mountain to receive the coveted “A+ rating” two years ago. This makes a huge difference to parents when deciding which school their young children should attend. ....

Gary Wayne Prosper, 85, formerly of Massena

Gary Wayne Prosper, age 85, of Fountain Hills, AZ passed away peacefully on 1/9/2021, after complications due to long standing heart disease which was non-COVID related.
Gary was born in Massena, NY to Joseph and Blanche (Gratton) Prosper on 6/18/1935, and graduated from Massena High School in 1953 excelling in both academics and athletics.
After graduating, he had a brief stint at Union College in Schenectady, NY, then joined the military in 1954, spending time in Korea, being discharged in 1956.
Following discharge, he married the love of his life, MaryEllen Faucher, had son Andy and daughter Tracie, attended Clarkson College in Potsdam, NY, graduated SUNY at Potsdam with a degree in education, then taught high school math for 6 years at Massena High School. He was an active skier and was on the Lake Placid ski patrol, played semi pro football and coached his son’s hockey teams. ....

Ataco joined Fountain Hills' Sister Cities family in 2007


Ataco, El Salvador, joined Fountain Hills as its third Sister City in 2007.
The small mountain town in northwest El Salvador is a town of resilience and hope. Affected frequently by hurricanes, flooding and poverty, the community is filled with residents who love their town, their country and everything they have, which may not be much, relatively speaking.
According to an article in The Times by former editor Mike Scharnow, safe and secure housing remains a major issue for families throughout the country.
“While the country’s landscape is beautiful with greenery, hillsides and inactive volcanoes, the flipside is a real and distinct vulnerability to such natural disasters as hurricanes, mudslides, earthquakes and active volcanoes,” Scharnow wrote. ....
