Community Profile: Glenwood Springs Parks and Rec Director loves the memories made in public service

Glenwood Springs Parks and Recreation Director Brian Smith has been all around the country, but he found his place in the mountains where he’s able to provide a rewarding public service to everyone else who lives here.
Smith describes himself as a “mutt of culture,” saying that his travels during childhood took him through 10 different states.
“As an adult, my wife and I spent six months touring the country with our four children exploring national parks and each state’s unique culture,” Smith said. “We met a lot of amazing people and experienced everything that makes America so special. Our favorite region has always been the Mountain West, where we’ve raised our children and have always considered home.” ....

At this point in the COVID-19 pandemic, with vaccination rates going up and inoculations now available to anyone over fifteen, officials had hoped that case counts would be in serious decline. But no: This week s roundup of data from the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment shows infections and hospitalizations continuing to rise and the number of newly identified outbreaks has skyrocketed.
The 170 new outbreak sites in the state listed on the CDPHE s just-released April 28 survey represents a 13.166 percent increase in just seven days and the spike is paced by an explosion of outbreaks at schools in which the overwhelming majority of positive tests involve students. The 52 outbreaks at K-12 facilities account for well over a quarter of the new outbreaks. ....

COLORADO SPRINGS â A massive boulder crashing off the mountain side in North Cheyenne Canon has forced the closure of Lower Gold Camp Road in Colorado Springs. Never seen a boulder this large come off these canyon walls, said Scott Abbott with Colorado Springs Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services. Abbotâs been caring for parks in Colorado Springs for more than 20 years.
The boulder is the size of a car. It fell with no warning Sunday afternoon. The park was crowded and a lot of visitors watched it come crashing down onto the road. We got extremely lucky that there weren t cars or recreationalists in the way when this rock decided to find a new home, said Abbott. ....
