Pikes Peak Cog Railway In Manitou Springs Opens To Visitors After A Nearly Four-Year Hiatus

The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway opens this week to the public after closing in 2017 for improvements. The railway invested $100 million in new tracks and cars, shipped in from Switzerland, to carry folks up to the summit of Pikes Peak.
Assistant general manager Ted Johnston said it s one of only a few cog railways in the United States. He said he s hoping with the demand for travel destinations, the railway will see large numbers of visitors over the next few months.
It s just exciting to move out of a project phase and into an operations phase, Johnston said. Seeing people come through the doors, and have for most people a once-in-a-lifetime experience of taking the cog railway to Pikes Peak. ....

MANITOU SPRINGS â The Manitou Springs City Council has approved a resolution to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous People s Day.
An announcement released Thursday said the City recognizes the fact that it was built on the homelands of the Ute, Cheyenne, and Arapahoe tribes of the region.
The council passed the resolution on Feb. 16, 2021, proclaiming the second Monday in October as Indigenous People s Day.
âAs a city that was built on the lands of the indigenous peoples of this area, it is our duty to respect their many contributions to our society and celebrate the knowledge and cultural impact that the indigenous people of this region have had on us all. While doing so, we must also oppose the systemic racism that they have experienced since Europeâs arrival in the United States, and recognize the wrongdoings of the past, ....
