$2.3 Million for Tahoe Center will Fund 3-D Public Education on Lake Ecosystems

Members of the public will be able to visually immerse themselves in two of the best-known lakes in the United States, thanks to a $2.3 million grant from the National Science Foundation to UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center.
The three-year grant will be used to develop three-dimensional visualization technology to enhance public understanding and stewardship of freshwater lake ecosystems and earth-science processes. The project will directly reach some 400,000 visitors to Lake Tahoe in California and Nevada, and Lake Champlain in Vermont and New York.
The project s collaborators hope it will serve as a global prototype for lake and watershed education. ....

County to submit final grant application for Pine Gulch Fire mitigation

Mesa County hopes to get more than a half-million dollars in a federal grant to help mitigate watershed damage done during last summerâs Pine Gulch Fire, the third largest in the stateâs history.
The county has applied for, and is poised to receive, $570,000 in a matching grant from the Natural Resources Conservation Service, a U.S. Department of Agriculture agency that provides technical and financial assistance to private landowners to better manage agricultural and forest lands.
The county is putting $120,000 toward the grant, money thatâs already included in this yearâs budget.
Andrew Martsolf, the countyâs emergency services director, said the money is needed to help protect numerous creeks and watershed left bare by the fire, subjecting them to massive erosion if work isnât done to mitigate that damage. ....

Snowpack that powers the Snake River finally where it should be

After several decidedly wintry weeks marked by flurries, powder days and even some storms, the snowpack in the Snake River basin is weighing in . right about where it normally would the last week of February.
Early winter in Northwestern Wyoming was somewhat dry, so itâs an improvement for the water weight of the snowpack to be sitting at 102% of the long-term median.
High-elevation snow that has fallen in recent weeks has tended to be light and dry, one reason the perception of a whopper winter and reality of a typical snowpack donât perfectly align.
âYou guys have got your normal snows from the west, but itâs been really dry, and that shows up on the snow-water equivalent,â said Jim Fahey, the National Resource Conservation Serviceâs Wyoming hydrologist. ....
