Coast Guard gives qualified support to integration plan

The Australian Volunteer Coast Guard (AVCG) confirmed today its commitment to work co-operatively with the Queensland Government to merge Queensland’s various marine search and rescue organisations into a single service.
But AVCG National Commodore Mr Terry Langford said the group’s support was in-principle only, given the state government had not yet released any implementation details.
“Once the government produces its implementation plan, the AVCG board will review it in detail and provide a formal response,” he said.
“The consultation process has been going on since February 2019 on the Blue Water Review and an interim Working Group (BWIWG) was formed in March this year. We now need a set of milestones on the draft concept of operations so all parties can chart the way forward for the single integrated service.” ....

Queensland boating and marine enthusiasts will be safer on the water following the announcement of a $470,000 grant program for Volunteer Marine Rescue Squadrons and Coast Guard Flotillas to support emergency response capability.
Minister for Fire and Emergency Services Mark Ryan MP, said the new investment would enhance marine rescue services across the State.
“To complement our $35 million commitment to establish an integrated single marine rescue service following the recommendations of the Blue Water Review, this grant program will directly support frontline units and relieve the fundraising burden on volunteers,” Mr Ryan said. ....

VMR Mackay volunteer's passion lies with team and service

Russell McLennan has spent the past 44 years volunteering his time for something he loves with men and women he respects and admires.
So it doesnât feel like a job and when he accepted the Lori Burgess Community Volunteer award, it was on behalf of the team.
Itâs a credit to him personally, though, that the longstanding VMR Mackay volunteer was called to the MECC stage on Monday night at the Mackay 2021 Australia Day awards.
âIâm not in it for the awards, Iâm in it because I enjoy doing it,â Mr McLennan said.
