Rex Jetstar Virgin Sydney-Melbourne $29 fares

Australians looking for cheap flights are already benefiting from Rex s entry into the domestic market - with Jetstar and Virgin cutting prices in response.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission on Wednesday found Rex flights, which began this month, benefited customers of other airlines.
The new operator offered $49 flights on the Melbourne to Sydney route. Virgin matched the price, while Jetstar offered $29 fares.
Rex will soon fly to Adelaide, Canberra and the Gold Coast.
Rex Airlines has gone from flying regionally in NSW to taking on the Virgin and Jetstar on interstate routes (above)

The nation s competition watchdog has dismissed claims Qantas is attempting to push other airlines out of the domestic market with predatory behaviour.
In an aviation report released by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission on Wednesday, the regulator said claims made by Regional Express that Qantas is attempting to price out the smaller airline were unfounded.
Rex has publicly bashed Qantas over its recent expansion into regional domestic routes while international travel remains grounded because of the coronavirus pandemic. ....

UK competition authority chief says compelling case to regulate most powerful tech platforms
The chief executive of the Competition and Markets Authority has admitted regulators such as his in the UK and others around the world “struggled to stay ahead of the curve” and keep up with the tech giants.
But Andrea Coscelli said there is now “less uncertainty” in the digital market than there was five years ago, with enough evidence to make a “compelling case that a new regulatory framework for the most powerful platforms is required to promote competition in a number of digital markets”.
Timeline
In April the UK Government will launch a new competition regime, the Digital Markets Unit, within the CMA to rein in the dominance and power of platforms such as Google and Facebook, rebalancing the relationship between the tech giants and news publishers. ....
