State College Area School Board Approves 2021-22 Academic Calendar


2021-22 academic calendar that will include the return of a weeklong spring break.
The school year will begin on Tuesday, Aug. 24 and the last day will be Friday, June 3. High school commencement is scheduled for June 4.
“We had a lot of discussions around that, whether we would start the week before Labor Day or two weeks before,” Will Stout, assistant superintendent for secondary education, said during a discussion of the calendar at the board’s Feb. 15 meeting. “We strongly believe that we get more value instructionally with our students at the end of August … than we get the later we move into June. So we prioritized that earlier starting date so we could get out earlier in June.” ....

School districts prepare for snow days


With virtual instruction models already in place, some school districts plan to go online for upcoming snow days.
Some districts have been approved for Flexible Instructional Days (FID) by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. The FID program, established in 2019, allows school districts to move to an online format “when circumstances prevent the delivery of instruction in its customary manner or location,” according to the Department of Education.
Blue Mountain Superintendent David Helsel, Ed.D., said the district applied to participate in the FID program after establishing a one-to-one technology program and providing more than 200 hot spots throughout the district.
“Before, we did not have one-to-one, we didn’t feel comfortable applying,” Helsel said. “This summer, we were able to go one-to-one.” ....

In a typical year, school would be canceled and students and teachers could hunker down at home during a snowstorm without having to report to classes.
But this is the year when COVID-19 disrupted everything once thought of as typical, forcing people to cope with a work-around in response to the pandemic.
School districts across Cumberland County will turn to remote instruction Wednesday as a nor’easter threatens to dump a foot or more of snow on southcentral Pennsylvania.
For districts like South Middleton and Carlisle already on full remote due to rising COVID cases, it will be just another day for students to take online lessons. ....
