In the wake of the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis at the hands of police, Nebraska lawmakers passed a bill May 20 that increases certification and training standards for law officers.
Under LB 51, sponsored by Omaha Sen. Steve Lathrop, the current 20 hours of annual continuing education required of all officers would increase to 28 hours in 2022, and then to 32 hours in 2023.
The bill requires a psychological evaluation of applicants who have not worked previously in law enforcement to determine their fitness for duty.
And, applicants seeking entry-level law enforcement certification would be required to train in de-escalating volatile situations related to mental health behavior, substance abuse, anti-bias, implicit bias and crisis communication. ....
