What's in City Press | Magashule tries to break the NEC; Amabutho ready to defend king

Gauteng and the Free State ANC provincial structures have not submitted any lists of “step-aside names” after Luthuli House compiled a list from seven provinces that include more than 60 members who have been charged or are facing allegations of committing serious crimes.
Some ANC branches in the Free State, the Northern Cape and North West have embarked on attempts to persuade the national executive committee (NEC) to reinstate suspended ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule, failing which they will demand an early national general council.
Lets Pretorius of the Boeremag thought he would die in prison as a “white political prisoner”, but he has quietly been given parole. Pretorius (75), a medical doctor, was released from the Zonderwater Prison, east of Pretoria, around August last year.

Mkhuseli 'Khusta' Jack is AIMing high

Former firebrand, anti-apartheid activist and renowned community leader Mkhuseli “Khusta” Jack has lambasted previous and current Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality leaders for mismanagement, saying it is the ultimate insult to the memory of the statesman that a metro named after him has been allowed to deteriorate so much.
Officially launching his residents’ movement – the Abantu Integrity Movement (AIM) – and its 10-point plan in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, this week, the activist-turned-entrepreneur said the metro urgently needed to be rescued from corrupt and incompetent politicians who have caused mass destruction.
The 10-point plan is a blueprint aimed at improving service delivery to residents by bringing in competent municipal administrators with integrity who are dedicated to serving the residents.

What's in City Press: Ace's allies vow SA shutdown; Lesufi's secret tender

Lesufi’s secret tender
Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi was recorded in a meeting he held with his team in Tshwane, during which his department tenders were discussed. In the recording, which City Press has heard, Lesufi told the team that, as an MEC, he had to ensure that people were satisfied at all costs.
Magashule set to tell elders that he is a target
ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule is set to begin his “consultations” with erstwhile party leaders, armed with claims that the move to have him step aside is politically motivated. He will also claim that law enforcement agencies are being used to settle political scores, City Press has learnt.

Chippa United going for 10 consecutive PSL matches away from home

Jan 22, 2021 - 07:43 pm
By Lovemore Moyo
In an occurrence that hasn’t been heard of before, Chippa United will play their seventh consecutive game away from home on Saturday.
This extraordinary series of fixtures will eventually rise to 10 matches on the road by the end of January.
According to the club, the reasons for what will now go down as the longest run of away games ever in domestic top-flight football are precautionary measures related to the Covid-19 pandemic.
When President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality – where Chippa United are based – had been declared a Covid-19 hostspot at the beginning of December, the club responded by making an application to play all their upcoming games away from home to help curb the spread.

What will it take for SA's health system to save lives in Covid-19's second wave?

What will it take for SA’s health system to save lives in Covid-19’s second wave?
By Opinion
By Dr Lesedi Motstatsi and Claire Waterhouse
South Africa survived a harrowing first wave of Covid-19 with lower deaths than anticipated. With overall population adherence to safety regulations despite their clear economic impact, the country had reason to breathe a small sigh of relief when case loads started dropping. A national effort largely prevented the worst from happening and most analyses seemed to suggest there was some time to prepare before the inevitable second wave hit, just as it started gaining momentum in other parts of the world.

It's initiation time in the Eastern Cape, and it's a go

It’s all systems go for the summer initiation season in the Eastern Cape, which officially began this past Thursday.
Thousands of boys are expected to flock to traditional initiation schools, following intense lobbying by the Eastern Cape government and traditional leaders for the rituals to take place in the province.
This was after the practice was suspended early this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, even before Thursday, at least five initiates (abakhwetha) had already died in the province’s OR Tambo and Alfred Nzo districts due to botched circumcisions.
The five included the first initiate to die this year in Gxulu, in the Nyandeni Local Municipality, under the OR Tambo district, last month.

Emergency response: Doctors without Borders urges gover...

Two big organisations operating in the Eastern Cape — as hospitals buckle under the weight of an increased patient load due to Covid-19 infections and an increased number of health workers falling ill or required to isolate themselves — this week highlighted the need for a rapid response to the human resources challenges brought about by the pandemic’s second wave.
While the latest outbreak of coronavirus infections in the Eastern Cape was isolated to Nelson Mandela Bay and the Sarah Baartman district (large parts of the Karoo, but also the towns of Kareedouw and popular holiday towns such as Jeffreys Bay) the latest epidemiological report for the province showed that between Wednesday 9 December and Thursday 10 December, 44% of new cases were from the Buffalo City Metro (East London), the Chris Hani district (including Komani, Cradock and Middelburg) and 17.7% from Alfred Nzo and the OR Tambo districts (in the former Transkei and Ciskei).
