Lawmakers and staff are seen working in the Nevada State Legislative Building in Carson City on April 15, 2021.
Nevada is set to raise mining taxes, make a permanent switch to mail-in voting and offer a state-regulated health insurance plan after a late Monday marathon of votes at the state Legislature.
Gov. Steve Sisolak is expected to sign each of the major measures adopted in the final hours of the state’s hectic, 120-day lawmaking session, along with bills that would decriminalize traffic tickets and scrap the state’s presidential caucus. ....

Nevada’s Senate and Assembly Judiciary committees in a joint session on Saturday, May 22, approved of a bill that would allow casinos to prohibit firearms on their properties despite bipartisan opposition that far outweighed support for the bill.
Senate Bill 452, which is now headed to the full Senate, has been called “gun-free zone” legislation by the National Rifle Association’s policy arm and a “stop-and-frisk” bill by the ACLU of Nevada. It would ban both open and concealed carry of firearms at prohibited locations, but it includes exceptions for casino security and law enforcement, residential unit owners and ....

Efforts to overhaul Nevada’s school funding formula and limit no-knock warrants survived another major deadline at the Legislature, where lawmakers on Friday coolly and quickly culled dozens of bills from a stack of legislation set for a final vote over the next two weeks.
Death penalty opponents, who have spent decades trying to end capital punishment in Nevada, were not amused. The Nevada ACLU issued a searing statement calling the move “an embarrassment,” while progressive activists jammed the phone lines at a series of unrelated committee hearings to protest the bill’s demise. ....

When asked if the legislation bolstering tenant protections was dead, bill sponsor state Sen. Julia Ratti said “it looks that way.”
Democratic Assemblywoman Sandra Jauregui said Wednesday thatSenate Bill 218, which would have mandated a three-day grace period before charging late fees on rent, puts stipulations on when landlords can collect rental application fees and limits hidden fees associated with rentals, would not be getting a hearing.
